Tucked beneath the towering oaks of Elizabeth City, The Culpepper Inn stands as more than just a place to rest—it's a place to experience. Its story began in the 1930s, when local merchant and visionary William Culpepper built this grand home, a reflection of his ambition and deep roots in the community. Over the years, its halls echoed with the laughter of family, the whispers of history, and the footsteps of a man whose life spanned industries—from cotton oil to motion pictures, from postmaster to State Representative.
But time has a way of reshaping even the grandest of homes. By the 1990s, the once-stately Culpepper home had faded into disrepair, its grandeur nearly lost—until a new chapter began. Its first innkeepers saw past the dust and decay, breathing new life into its walls, transforming it into the welcoming sanctuary it is today. The historic charm was preserved, the Guest House was added for those seeking privacy with a touch of the past, and the original Carriage House became The Tavern Room—a warm, intimate gathering space.
In 2011, Holly became the fifth innkeeper, drawn not only to the beauty of the home but to its place in the heart of the community. She envisioned The Culpepper Inn as more than just a place to stay—it would be a living tribute to its past, a space where guests and locals alike could gather, celebrate, and find respite. To bring that vision to life, she hired Michael to assist with the extensive manual labor required to restore the inn's former glory. What began as a working partnership soon became something more, and by 2013, the two had fallen in love. Together, they embraced the responsibility of being stewards of this remarkable home, preserving its history while offering modern comforts to every guest who walks through its doors.
Here, history isn't just something you read about—it's something you feel. From the moment you step onto the porch, you're part of the story. Whether you're seeking a quiet retreat, a girls' getaway, or a place to make your own memories, The Culpepper Inn is more than a stay—it's an experience waiting for you to step inside.
